An enterprising person who applies business practices to addressing social issues
A person who works primarily for public and social benefit rather than to maximise profits for shareholders
For the Social Entrepreneur, the untapped market is individuals or communities in need who have not been reached by other initiatives as opposed to commercial markets.
There are many big conversations currently coming out of the new Government about Social Enterprises and Social Entrepreneurs but it is by no means a new concept. Florence Nightingale was such an entrepreneur as the founder of modern nursing. She established the first school of nursing and fought to improve hospital conditions.
Working as a Social Entrepreneur does not mean that I work completely for free! I work on special ring-fenced projects whereby for every two hours I am paid I donate one hour to specific community projects that I am working with. The project of this kind that I am working on now is the Stylicious Career Boutique.
Previously, I donated time to supporting Coast in planning and hosting a fashion show for the Women in Property Network. This was on the basis that some of the models would come from the pool of Broxtowe and Aspley residents who attended my recently completed "Confidence through Style" course.
Here you see Nicola how she looked on the day she started the course and the amazing transformation as she turned model for the day.
I remain committed to working with the private, public and third sector to help realise social benefit for unemployed people in disadvantaged communities. I work with a view to assisting in the quest to reduce benefit dependency and maximise opportunities to help people move into sustainable employment.
